Hocket Sandbox

“Hocket Sandbox started as a summer project based off a progression of sixteenth-note block chords for solo marimba.  Upon the near immediate realization that seven minutes of sixteenth-note block chords would be physically and aurally exhausting for solo marimba, the piece became a duo.  The duo, as a result, often functions as members of a single voice, developing phrases and melodies together.  The title comes from the rapid trading of sixteenth notes between the two players, similar to a hocket, and the nature of free-flowing counterpoint all using the same tonal language and central motive, much like a child terraforming grains of sand in a sandbox.  In that sense, the piece intends to display childhood imagination through the lens of a young adult.”
