in Blue

“in Blue is a marimba solo written for Tristan Swihart, completed in early 2021.  Inspired by the marimba writing of Paul Smadbeck, the piece cycles in permutations around a stepwise-descending melodic line.  The title of the piece comes from an experience I had one evening walking along the shore of Lake Ontario, when the blue of the sky matched the blue of the ocean.  Though I have since forgotten much of the memory itself, the mood of blue remains.”
